The dear city at its best
17 March 2020, lockdown day one. Boom… all of a sudden many loyal volunteers became ‘unemployed’. It was a consequence of many volunteer organisations in Amsterdam temporarily having to close due to the corona measures. However, from this day on our phone at Vrijwilligers Centrale Amsterdam (Volunteer Centre Amsterdam) did not stop ringing: from all corners of the city new volunteers contacted us wanting to do something good, especially now.
People wanting to offer practical help to neighbours in their community, or to support vulnerable older people, or to digitally assist children with their homework, and so on.
In Amsterdam there were already 250,000 active volunteers and since the corona pandemic at least another 6,000 have joined. So much effort and dedication, so many new initiatives, such a willingness to help each other – so much heart-warming energy from volunteers. The dear city is at its best in these crazy times!
