Holes in the City
Although buildings and houses in Amsterdam came out of the war relatively unscathed, the persecution of the Jews left irreparable holes in the city. Three-quarters of the 80,000 deported Jews of Amsterdam were murdered. On the occasion of 75 years of freedom, 4 and 5 May Amsterdam and the Jewish Cultural Quarter invited photographer Jeroen Hofman to depict these holes in a photo series. He photographed emotionally charged places such as the Muiderpoort station, from where 11,000 Amsterdam Jews were deported to Westerbork and the concentration camps. Hofman made his photographs during the corona restrictions. The deserted streets emphasize the emptiness that was left behind.
