Frie the piepol
‘Only together can we get government back under control. I am no longer taking part. Free the people’. A number of Dutch celebrities joined this campaign on their social media channels using the hashtag #ikdoenietmeermee (Iamnolongertakingpart). The singer Famke Louise from Almere, in particular, came in for some fierce criticism. In the end, a member of the Outbreak Management Team who also works on an IC unit, Diederik Gommers, managed to convince her that the corona measures made a significant difference even though nobody likes them.
Someone wrote the words ‘Frie the piepol’ on almost all yellow signage showing the way to the corona test centre near Buikslotermeerplein in Amsterdam Noord. Is this a protest? Or is it an ironic comment on the protest? The phonetically written text in Dunglish suggests it’s the latter.
