Concerns about vaccinating the undocumented
Tens of thousands of undocumented people illegally reside in Amsterdam. They do not have a citizen service number, which makes it hard for them to receive care. According to the government this group is also eligible for vaccination; but how do you vaccinate people who prefer to remain out of sight?
The Brazilian Leidy lives with her husband and three children in the Nieuw West area of Amsterdam. She and one of her children were infected with coronavirus in October. She was able to sort things out because she can speak English, but she is aware that many undocumented people do not dare ask for help. ‘They are afraid that the hospital won’t take them in.’ Also, people without documents prefer to stay out of sight for fear of being arrested by the alien police.
