Covid King’s Day

Eight portraits, taken on King’s Day 2020. Each person was asked “What would you rather be doing on this King’s Day (if there was no Covid-19). Their names and responses, clockwise from top right.

Josefine van Kamban – “I would prefer to be on a boat with all my friends near me! This is the second best, amazing thing I could wish to do, but normally you could not do this because it’s really crowded here. When you are on a boat you have your own party with 30 or 40 people with all the people you know there. But this is really great as well.”

Denis Kott – “Normally we’d be sitting on the boat, we do one round on the canals, end over here, have some drinks over here and that’s it.”

Peter Sampow – Normally he has a large stand selling food, he would rather be working than sitting and relaxing.

Rob Stelling – “Partying! I love the music. I want to party and dance and walk in the Jordaan and dance on every corner with different music and different people and enjoying the atmosphere. That is the way King’s Day should be.”

Guus & Suzan – “I just wish the crowd was there, I really miss the crowd a lot. And to not be aware of things around me all the time.”

Carla – “[I would rather] celebrate in the street”

Lilian Jes & Claire Cornelissa -“Normally on a boat, with loud music, partying with a lot of friends. And then go to Amstelveldje and party there until very late. Maybe go to a club to finish it.”

Etienne Slapak – “I would prefer to be with my friends at the gay monument at the Westerkerk and just have a dance. And if not there, just with friends, among people, in a crowd.”
